Have you ever wished for an activity that could bring your whole family together, improve everyone’s health, build community connections, AND doesn’t cost a penny?
It sounds too good to be true, but for millions of UK families, this dream becomes reality every weekend at parkrun events across the country.
From Humble Beginnings to National Movement
What started in 2004 with just 13 runners in London’s Bushy Park has blossomed into one of the UK’s most extraordinary community health initiatives. Paul Sinton-Hewitt, parkrun’s founder, could hardly have imagined that his simple idea a free, timed 5km run every Saturday morning would grow to encompass over 1,000 events nationwide with more than 4.5 million registered participants. But the real game-changer for families came in 2010 with the introduction of Junior parkrun dedicated 2km events designed specifically for children aged 4-14. From those first few Junior events with around 100 weekly participants, we’ve witnessed extraordinary growth to approximately 50,000 children participating each week by 2024. Today, children represent nearly 20% of all parkrun participants across the UK!
A Family Affair: Why parkrun Works for Every Age
What makes parkrun uniquely suited to families is its beautiful simplicity and inclusivity. Here’s why thousands of families make it part of their weekly ritual:
For children:
• The 2km Junior parkrun distance is perfectly achievable yet challenging
• The supportive atmosphere eliminates competition pressure
• Weekly participation builds consistency and healthy habits
• The achievement system (wristbands at milestone runs) provides motivation
• Running alongside peers builds social confidence
For parents:
• Model healthy behaviors for your children
• Participate together or take turns volunteering
• No planning or equipment needed – just show up!
• Watch your child’s confidence and fitness grow week by week
• Connect with other local families in a positive environment
The Ripple Effect: Health Benefits Beyond the Obvious
The physical benefits of regular parkrun participation are clear improved cardiovascular fitness, healthy weight management, and better overall physical health. But for families, the benefits extend far beyond the obvious:
• Mental wellbeing: Studies show regular parkrun participants report reduced anxiety, improved mood, and better stress management benefits that extend to children and adults alike.
• Family bonding: In our device-dominated world, parkrun creates a precious space for genuine family connection. Whether running together, cheering each other on, or celebrating achievements, it strengthens family bonds.
• Confidence building: The incremental achievements at parkrun build children’s self-efficacy and resilience, qualities that transfer to school and other life challenges.
• Healthy habit formation: Children who participate in parkrun are developing physical activity habits that may last a lifetime, establishing a foundation for long-term health.
Research from several UK universities has documented significant improvements in children’s physical fitness, concentration at school, and overall wellbeing when they participate regularly in Junior parkrun events.
Creating Community Champions Through Volunteering Perhaps parkrun’s most powerful yet understated impact lies in its volunteer model. Each event requires around 20 volunteers from timekeepers to marshals to tail walkers creating one of the UK’s largest volunteer movements.
For families, this volunteer structure offers extraordinary benefits:
• Children learn the value of giving back to their community
• Teenagers can gain valuable experience and skills
• Rotating volunteer roles teaches responsibility and teamwork
• Families connect with their local community across generations and backgrounds
The Numbers Speak Volumes
The growth in family participation tells a compelling story:
• Over 300 dedicated Junior parkrun events nationwide
• From 100 weekly child participants in 2010 to approximately 50,000 in 2024
• Children’s participation grew by approximately 66% between 2015-2019
• Post-pandemic recovery has been remarkable, exceeding pre-pandemic levels
• Children now make up 15-20% of all parkrun participants
But behind these impressive statistics are thousands of individual family success stories the child who discovered they love running, the parent who finally found sustainable exercise, the family that built new friendships in their community.

As a PE educator of 25 years, running to me is the greatest gift you can give a child. The knowledge and freedom to run and therefore exercise at any time in their lives is a powerful tool for physical and mental well being. And parkrun has done a phenomenal job of giving thousands of children, families and people this gift.
A friend of mine in Melbourne Australia set herself the challenge of doing an A-Z of park runs. Another friend who hadn't run for years has just taken it up. What's your challenge??
This weekend could be the start of your family’s parkrun journey – a small step that might just change your lives in ways you never imagined.
