Boost Your Family’s Health and Happiness by leading by example

Being a physically active parent is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children. Not only does it improve your own health and well-being, but it also sets your kids on a path toward a happier, healthier future. Here’s why and how you can make it work for your family.

Why It Matters

  • Role Modelling: Kids learn by example. When they see you enjoying exercise, they’re far more likely to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity themselves.
  • Physical and Mental Health: Regular exercise keeps you strong, reduces stress, and boosts your mood, making you a better, more resilient parent.
  • Family Bonding: Exercising together creates fun memories and strengthens family bonds, turning fitness into a source of joy rather than a chore.
  • Healthy Habits for Life: Children with active parents are more likely to stay active into adulthood, reducing their risk of obesity and chronic illness.

How to Achieve the Benefits

  • Make It Fun - Find activities everyone enjoys-dancing in the living room, playing football, or going for bike rides.
  • Turn chores into games or have family dance parties to keep everyone moving.
  • Start Small and Build - Even 10 minutes a day can make a difference. Begin with short walks or simple games, then gradually add more activity as it becomes routine. Create opportunities for incidental exercise (taking stairs, walking to shops)
  • Involve the Whole Family - Plan active outings: walks in the park, swimming, or exploring local trails together. Sign up for family friendly events or sports days. Give an element of choice.
  • Be Consistent and Supportive - Encourage each other and celebrate small wins. Consistency helps turn activity into a habit for everyone.
  • Be vocal about enjoying physical activity, 'I feel really good after that walk', little comments of affirmation go a long way.

We've always tried this approach and to great effect, our teenagers now choose to take themselves off for a walk or bike ride when they need some activity as they know it will make them feel better. I quite often say 'oh I don't feel like going for a run but I know I'll feel better after I've done it' as I push myself out the door 😂

What better gift can you give a child than the power to make positive choices!

As concerns continue about children's physical activity levels, parental modelling offers a practical intervention strategy. The evidence is clear: when parents commit to personal physical activity, they don't just improve their own health, they lay the groundwork for a lifetime of better choices for their children.

By stepping away from screens, lacing up trainers, and embracing movement, parents can inspire the next generation toward healthier, more active futures.

Sometimes the most powerful parenting happens without words at all, but through the quiet influence of consistent example.
